8 Week Moving Checklist
Week 8
- create a "moving file" to keep track of estimates, receipts, and other important information
- collect moving quotes if you choose to use a moving company
- contact chamber of commerce of new community and request a new resident packet
- draw out a floor plan of your new home and determine which function each room will serve
Week 7
- start compiling medical and dental records including prescriptions and shot records
- arrange to have school records transferred to your children's new school district
- get copies of any legal/financial records you need
- call insurance agents to let them know you’re moving and possibly obtain insurance for your new home
- contact organizations and health clubs you've joined to move, sell, or terminate your membership
Week 6
- make a list of hard to replace or valuable items and make accommodations for the move
- make a list of friends, relatives, and businesses to notify of your move
- work your way through each room and take inventory of what you would want to donate or sell during a yard sale - save your charitable receipts for tax purposes
- begin using up things that are difficult to move, such as frozen foods, bleach, or aerosol cleaners
Week 5
- start collecting boxes and other packing supplies
- begin packing items you don't use often
- plan ahead for possible short-term or long-term storage at new destination if needed
Week 4
- file a “change of address” at postal service
- schedule disconnection of all utility services at your old home and connection at your new residence
- host your yard sale
Week 3
- prepare auto registration to be transferred
- dispose of flammables, corrosives, and poisons
Week 2
- contact your bank to transfer or close accounts and clear out safety deposit boxes
- confirm travel arrangements for pets and family
- notify any creditors of move
- assemble a file of important information about the house for the new owner
Week before
- notify friends and family of your new address and phone number
- finish packing and prepare an "essentials" box
- designate several boxes and items as "last load" items
- empty and defrost refrigerator at least 24 hours before moving day
- fill any prescriptions or medications you will need for the next couple of weeks
Moving out
- supervise hired movers if used
- take inventory of boxes being loaded
- check every room, closet, and cabinet one last time before deciding if everything is loaded
Moving in
- check appliances to make sure all are in proper working order
- verify mail is being delivered to new address
- take inventory of incoming boxes to new residence
After moving tips
- get a new drivers license
- register to vote
- contact local paper for a new subscription
